Megatrend

Sustainability in the cosmetics world

The current megatrend

With regard to the development of the cosmetics market, not only in Germany but also worldwide, the theme of "nature" runs like a red thread through all trend analyses and forecasts by market researchers. Whatever the concept behind it, whether Clean, Green & Ethical Cosmetics or certified natural and organic cosmetics, but also Free-From or Phyto claims: It is striking that the cosmetics world is even more dominated by the sustainability megatrend than before the pandemic. In addition, there is the increasing influence and innovative power of start-ups as well as the need for individual products.

We can cover all these topics well with our positioning and the portfolio we have built up. The combination of consulting on the portfolios of our supplier partners and our own brands has proven to be a top talking point. Nevertheless, we are not getting tired of developing ourselves further and breaking new ground, such as the opening of an application technology laboratory for personal care applications. Full of optimism, we therefore look forward to the year 2022 and to exciting projects and concrete raw material enquiries

Olive Squalane

The silky soft emollient

100% of natural origin

Squalane is a native, saturated hydrocarbon obtained by hydrogenating the unsaponifiable components of olive oil. A product that is also a component of natural skin lipids.

In cosmetic formulations squalane is used as an efficient skin care component that shows good spreading properties. The application concentrations vary between 2 and 100 %. The emollient is 100% of natural origin from the olive of European cultivation, thus free of palm oil and suitable for COSMOS, NATRUE and Vegan requirements.

You already use olive squalane or want to formulate with it and need our support? Just send us an e-mail.

Zuplex

Honeybush a special ingredient not only as a tea

Halal certified and vegan

Honeybush is becoming increasingly popular as a food supplement and tea. As a water-soluble extract, honeybush is particularly attractive for a range of cosmetic formulations because of its antioxidant properties.

The caffeine-free ingredient has a sweet, honey-like aroma and contains many trace elements and minerals. It can be used to create a variety of head-to-toe products that meet claims such as anti-aging, detox, skin-soothing and moisturising. The recommended concentration for use is 1-5 %.

  • Green Honeybush Extract
  • INCI: CYCLOPIA GENISTOIDES LEAF EXTRACT, PROPANEDIOL, AQUA

All extracts from the South African manufacturer ZUPLEX are COSMOS-approved, Halal-certified, vegan and comply with the Nagoya Protocol.

STOCKMEIER

We open our first laboratory for Personal Care

We are looking forward to product training, customer and supplier events as well as to offer in-house product development

In January of this year, the decision was made to set up two laboratories for development and application technology for the Personal Care and Coatings divisions. State-of-the-art research labs and a seminar room have thus been created on the factory premises of STOCKMEIER Chemie Bielefeld, providing an open, friendly ambience and pleasant working environment. In the future, it will be possible to hold product training, customer and supplier events as well as to offer in-house product development and formulation services.

This is a milestone in the trend-driven cosmetics market, which is dominated by rapid changes, and complements the distribution of raw materials with specialised expert advice and technical service. Products and innovations in our industry are now strongly shaped by influencers and start-ups, while laboratory and development capacities can hardly keep up with the pace of these pioneers. Added to this are regulations and consumer demands. The classic development cycle of a cosmetic product (see figure) hardly corresponds to this reality any more.

In this respect, we want to offer our European customers and partners the know-how and support of STOCKMEIER Personal Care in the future. With the excellent equipment of the new laboratory, we have created the possibility to develop service-oriented and technical solutions in close cooperation with you. This includes the development of directional formulations as well as individual solutions for projects that cannot be covered by your own resources. Regular product training and demonstrations round off this service.

5 Questions to...

Andreas Geißler

Sales Consultant Specialty Chemicals

1. Why did you decide to join the STOCKMEIER Group?

I was looking for a new challenge in 2020. The STOCKMEIER Group offered me ideal conditions. I particularly like the fact that the Personal Care division has a broad portfolio of products that also reflect the important issues surrounding sustainability.

2. What is your favourite product?

In the past, I have been intensively involved with ester oils in cosmetics, so Rofetan® OE is one of my favourite products. This ester is characterised by its refatting and smoothing effect on the skin, is an important ingredient in hair care and a good solvent for active ingredients. It is important to note that Rofetan® OE is produced on a palm oil basis and is available in certified natural cosmetics quality, but also as RSPO-MB goods.

3. What is your main area of responsibility in Personal Care?

I am responsible in sales for the Personal Care products in Saxony and partly Thuringia. I am also responsible for industrial applications in southern and eastern Germany.

4. What do you value most in your dealings with customers?

I particularly appreciate the active involvement in developments of new formulations. In cosmetics, new products are constantly being developed, and market requirements can change or regulatory aspects have to be taken into account. I like to actively work on these issues with the customers and am happy when this leads to the success of a new product.

5. What do you do to balance your work?

The focus in my free time is on my family. We do a lot together, e.g. hiking in the surrounding mountains or city trips. In addition, I have had my own gin for a year, which I produce and sell in small batches.
